Alex Berenberg
Alex Berenberg is a career diplomat in the U.S. Foreign Service currently serving as the Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. He previously served as Acting Director and Deputy Director of the Office of Mainland Southeast Asia, Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, U.S. Department of State. Earlier diplomatic assignments overseas include two tours at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, China, as a political officer, along with service at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, as an economic officer, and at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan, as a consular officer. Domestically, he was Chief of Staff in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Foreign Policy Advisor to the Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and a watch officer at the U.S. Department of State Operations Center. He earned his Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude from Harvard University and his Master of Arts with highest distinction from the U.S. Naval War College. He is an RYA-trained sailor and an FAA-licensed Commercial Pilot with multiengine and instrument ratings. He speaks Mandarin Chinese.
