  • Deputy Managing Director, National Energy Authority of Papua New Guinea

Mr. Eddie Megao is the Deputy Managing Director of the National Energy Authority (NEA) of Papua New Guinea, appointed in January 2026. In this role, he serves as the Government of Papua New Guinea's lead technical authority for energy investment facilitation, overseeing the pipeline of bankable projects under the National Electrification Roll-Out Plan (NEROP) — the Government's flagship programme targeting 70% grid electrification by 2030 and universal energy access by 2050. He leads NEA's engagement with multilateral financing institutions including the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank, and coordinates with PNG Power Limited on the commercial and technical structuring of priority energy infrastructure projects. Mr. Megao is currently spearheading the development of Papua New Guinea's first offshore wind facility, an investment-ready project being advanced under NEA's mandate to diversify PNG's energy generation mix and attract private sector capital into the country's energy sector. He is PNG's delegate to the Office of Pacific Energy Regulators Alliance (OPERA), where he leads technical regulatory reform relevant to renewable energy investment, including the development of grid-connection standards for solar PV and battery energy storage systems (BESS) at PNG's regional airports under a Green Airport initiative co-developed with the ADB. He has also led the reform of PNG's Power Purchase Agreement governance framework to improve investor confidence and the commercial viability of independent power producer projects. With over 15 years of professional experience spanning the energy, mining, and engineering sectors, Mr. Megao brings a distinctive combination of technical depth and commercial acumen to PNG's energy investment agenda. Prior to his current appointment, he served as Executive Manager of NEA's Projects Division from 2022. Earlier in his career, he held senior engineering roles at Ok Tedi Mining Limited as Senior Engineering Hydrogeologist and Geotechnical Engineer, and at Newcrest Mining Limited's Lihir operations as Geotechnical Engineer — providing him with direct experience in the operational realities of PNG's resource sector. Mr. Megao holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Mining and Mineral Engineering from the Papua New Guinea University of Technology and a Master of Science in Geoengineering from AGH University of Science and Technology, Kraków, Poland. He holds an Executive Diploma in Governance and Leadership from the Somare Institute of Leadership and Governance and has completed the Director Development Program of the PNG Institute of Directors. He is a Professional Member of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (MAusIMM) and a Member of the Institute of Engineers Papua New Guinea (MIEPNG).
